Many of us usually change the sides of the mattress depending on the season: The winter and summer sides. However, it is recommended to do this much more often, at least once a week, to prevent its deformation.

The problem is that over time, the mattress accumulates dirt and dust, and dust mites can settle there, which may remain invisible to our eyes. This is a very unpleasant phenomenon that can negatively affect our health.

Sweat from our bodies, dust and dead skin cells create a comfortable environment for these microorganisms, they multiply and feel great, and because of them, we suffer from allergies or other diseases.

Regardless, most people don’t take the time and attention to sanitize their mattresses. Many do not even imagine how this is done in principle.

Fortunately, this is not such a difficult task, and if desired, anyone can handle it without leaving home. The use of expensive cleaning products is also optional.

1. Turn your Mattress Regularly

Course, simply changing the sides of a mattress does not guarantee disinfection, but it is a great way to provide adequate ventilation and prevent deformation. 

It is recommended to turn the mattress at least once a week while changing not only the top and bottom but also the sides head and feet.

You should not sleep on a mattress for a long time, the position of which does not change, as over time this can lead to deformation and it will become uncomfortable for you. Your back and night rest, in general, will suffer.

2. Make Sure the Mattress has Good Ventilation

Perhaps you have already heard somewhere that making your bed right in the morning is bad for your health?

And there is some truth in this, but after all, we were taught to be in order! What to do? Everything is fine, we are not talking about leaving the bed unmade for the whole day, you just need to wait 1-2 hours after you got up from it and then make it.

This is because dust mites breed especially easily in humid and warm environments, and the mattress is just the right place for this.

Ideally, the sheet and blanket should be removed from the bed to allow the mattress to air after it has served us faithfully throughout the night.

It is also important to provide fresh air in the bedroom to remove excess moisture.

3. Use Baking Soda

Combining baking soda with hydrogen peroxide is a great way to disinfect your mattress.

These products have antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties that reduce the presence of various types of microorganisms.

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons of baking soda (30 g)
  • 1 glass of 3% hydrogen peroxide (250 ml)
  • 2 drops of liquid soap

What you need:

  • 1 container with a spray
  • 1 clean cloth

What do we have to do?

  • Mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide.
  • Add liquid soap and mix well again.
  • Pour the resulting liquid into a container with a spray bottle and you can start cleaning your mattress.
  • Spray the required amount onto the surface of the mattress, paying particular attention to dirty areas.
  • Wait a few minutes for the liquid to absorb, then rub it with a dry, clean cloth.
  • The remains of the disinfection mixture can be removed with a vacuum cleaner.
  • Repeat the procedure at least once a month.

4. Use Tea Tree Essential Oil

  • Tea tree essential oil is an excellent disinfectant and odour-reducing agent.
  • Its properties violate the favourable environment for ticks and exclude the presence of harmful bacteria.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of baking soda (100 g)
  • 8 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar (62 ml)

What do we have to do?

  • Mix baking soda with tea tree essential oil and spread over the mattress.
  • Then scrub the mattress with a brush and apply a small amount of white vinegar to create a lather.
  • Leave to act for 1 hour, then remove the remaining cleaning agent with a vacuum cleaner.

5. Wash Sheets and Pillowcases Often

  • Frequent washing of your bedding is a great addition to disinfecting your mattress. This will help prevent premature wear.
  • After all, sheets and pillowcases quickly get dirty, they, like a mattress, absorb sweat, dust and dirt.
  • It is advisable to change bedding at least once a week. You need to wash them using disinfectants.
  • Also, always pay attention to the fact that the materials of your sheets and pillowcases are breathable from natural materials.

As you can see, cleaning and disinfecting a mattress is not that difficult at home. This is a very healthy habit. Try to do this regularly to avoid the accumulation of dirt and harmful microorganisms in your bed.
